Wolverine Brings in $87 Million In Opening Weekend

Marvel Entertainment‘s (MVL) new movie “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” had a huge opening weekend. The film, starring Hugh Jackman, brought in $87 million.

There was an interesting quote I noticed in a recent Bloomberg article:

“This is the most amazing year because what you’re seeing is recessionary movie-going,” said Paul Dergarabedian, box- office analyst for Hollywood.com. ‘Going to the movies has become a necessity with a price point people can accept. It will be a record because of the framework the recession is providing.'”

This is exactly the point I made earlier about Marvel Entertainment. Movies are a recession’s version of a cruise or a European vacation. They serve as a cheaper stand-in for family entertainment.

The company reports earnings tomorrow. In the fourth quarter, Marvel’s earnings rose 128.6%, and the company’s sales rose 105.2%! Both of these numbers significantly topped Wall Street expectations, and I predict a similar showing this time around. Marvel Entertainment is a very strong buy.
